"The Fifth Door"
"The Fifth Door" was commissioned as the cover for the second release by the Italian band Sailor Free. The label thought to market the CD largely as a psyche release, so the painting was conceived as a psychedelic collage of symbols and metaphors.
The painting shows the passage of a vessel from a "bad" place (the sides of the painting) into a "good" place (the center of the painting). The compositional forms are the same in both places, but the objective, literal meaning changes as you visually cross the line from one side to the other (for instance, the balloon that changes to a planet)...and yes, there are five doors.
